    hello my name is Nicolas i am 17 and i am very interested in setting up a reef tank, but i want to learn as much as i can before i get started any help will be greatly appreciated, i have a 55 gallon tank and am making a 45 gallon sump tank.

    a big question i have is should i put the protein skimmer first or the refugium what works best

    Welcome to 3reef,

    Being a new hobbyist I would start with the skimmer initially. You can place it in the sump and then add or change the sump to add a sand bed or macro algaes.
