I have been researching and i have no idea what to do. Should i keep my bio-wheel and filter media with carbon in my filters? 1/2 of the web sites said to take it out and the HOB filters are just used for water flow. Is this true? I also read that the Bio-wheel creates nitrites (which it is supposed to kill) very confused at the moment so please help me out here and try to answer all the questions (read my signature to get the background of my tank in mind) Thanks a lot for your help,

    Ryan

I would get rid of it. I do think that the filter floss like that does produce alot in the way of nitrates. You could use it to run carbon if you wanted but that's about all I would do with it.

HOB's are fine to use simply for running stuff like carbon and phosban. The filter floss is OK if you can keep on top of changing/cleaning. But the "wheel" filters are in fact not affective on marine tanks, as they just don't have enough surface area to support enough anaerobic bacteria to do the job they were intended to do.

so to put what both of you said in simpler terms, i should take the bio-wheel out. im kind of confused about what i should do with the filter pads. should i keep them in there because of the carbon?
