I know that protien skimmers remove bad stuff, as far as food waste, fish waste and what not, and concentrate all that badness into skimmate.

could you use the skimmate from an extablished tank to start a cycle on tank that you just started up? or in a rubbermaid if your trying to cure some dry base rock or sand?

I could be 100% bass ackwards on this, but in my noobly-lodgic it seems like a great idea. better than using a fish and makin him suffer through the cycling process.

You could use the skimmate if you wanted. Anything that will break down and go through the nitrogen cycle is gonna work. I'll stick to deli shrimp though because I can put them in a filter sock and pull them out or add more as needed. All up to you though.

In a filter sock, what a great idea. Way better then just droping it in the tank...

As a matter of fact, I've done that very thing. IME, it was a little faster as the skim mate is DOCs- you don't have to wait for anything to decay. :)
