I just picked up a blue hippo tang over the weekend. I did some research before I got him and understand they are somewhat hard to acclimate and prone to ich. He was hiding in the rocks when I first put him in the tank, but now he seems to have gotten comfortable and is out swimming in the open and playing with my pair of clowns. He eats at every feeding, but I noticed he will only eat flake. I've tried feeding pellets, mysis, brine and he won't even go near the nori on a clip. I also noticed faint white spots on him that weren't there when I first put him in. I really hope its not marine ich. Does anyone have any tips on keeping these fish healthy and happy? I'm a beginner and would hate to lose him because of that.

What size did you get the fish and how mature is the tank?

I got my Regal Tang when my tank was around 5 months old. And he was the size of a dime, He never really was a fan of Nori, I tried soaking the nori in garlic and never really touched it till he got a few inches bigger. If you havent given it a shot yet, Try soaking your nori or pellets in a garlic extract you can buy for fish, I personally am not sure if you can use stuff from the grocery store in liquid form. But I do know you can mince some garlic and soak it with the food. I have ever heard of people feeding them garlic cloves.

Long as the fish is active and still eats like a "cow" then you should be ok. Ive noticed with tangs that sometimes just letting them build up their immune system by eating works best rather then some chemicals. Oh and You could aslo int he mean time use stuff Like Vitamin C and Zoe to boast their nutritional value in the food.

When I got home from work last night the hippo tang was covered in white spots that looked like little grains of salt all over his fins and body. I got worried so I set up a hospital tank and planned on putting him in there the next day, but when I woke up this morning, the spots were all gone?! Weird. Not sure what's going on there. He seems healthy too. Still swimming around and eating the flake. Should I still put him in the HP? Or just leave him in there and see if the spots come back? BTW I have a 90 gallon tank w/ 30 g sump. Its been set up for about 2 months. Just have the tang, 2 clowns, a clean up crew and a couple soft corals in there.

Cleaner Shrimp or Goby will fix that. I have 3 Hippo Tangs now, one being 15 years all have ick at one time or another. If it is eating it will live. Moving it could stress it out to much.
    Did you try Spectrum Pellets?
Try soaking the flakes in Selcon, that may help.
