Ive been researching HOB skimmers. There are many to choose from, but I want a low profile skimmer (one that doesnt stick up 8 inches above the tank ...unsightly). Im still researching ...any suggestions?

Definitely the Aqua C Remora. It only sticks up a few inches and has a very slim profile. Plus it does a great job. I had one on my 55 for a while and really liked it.

I'm a huge fan of the Octopus 300HB. We have three tanks running, two with sumps, and our oldest, a four year old 55 using the HOB Skimmer. It's really the only reason we haven't taken down the 55 and integrated everything. The skimmer itself has two pumps, and a Surface skimmer. Besides the Surface skimmer box and little amount of return Pipe, everything is in the external box behind the tank. The other plus is you can fit a 200 watt heater in the return section. Early on I tried a Seaclone, umm yeahh, and Tunze. This skimmer works great for us, A 55 with mixed corals and seven small fish.

Thanks to both of you. I noticed the remora, but couldnt tell how high it would be. As for the octopus, I like the overflow box, as I do not have a sump. My current skimmer/ filter combo has an overflow and it makes a huge difference in surface cleanliness and GE.

So Ive been doing alot of research too on HOB. At first i was tempted to buy the Aquac Remora, but then I started looking at octopus. I bought an octopus bh100, haven't used it yet because I might end up building a sump after all. But from all my research; octopus was one of the more highly praised HOB. The nice thing about them is that they are very simple, and unlike the Remora, you can see all the skimming take place because of the clear design.

oh, the collection cup is ridiculously high in that pic, I forget what I was trying to show... probably just those anti fish jump lids (since replaced with a better solution). But anyway the cup is much lower in practice, but still highest point on the unit.
