came home from shoping today and my tank is 86 degrees.. is this a problem? will it kill anyhting?

my MH bulds are 4'' above the tank and i think this is what caused the crazy high temp

    2 questions

    1. is this harmful and how do i get it back in the safe range?

    2. how high should the MH lights be above the tank? [IMG]

this is how my light set up is

86 is high imho. Also you have your MH a little close to the tank. I keep mine about 10-12in from the tank. To get it back to safe range, you can place a fan over the water, or you can place a frozen pop bottle in the sump to help cool it down.

Dont try to cool the temperature immediately or else you can put your fish/corals in shock and end up killing them.

+1, raise the MHs up to 12" and turn them off, allow evaporation to cool the tank. I suggest getting a fan or some other form of cooling.

i dont know about killing but definately will stress most things more than likely, for now maybe throw a cup full of ice in your sump maybe for short term problem, for long term look into cooling fans for the lights or maybe even a chiller

Lights are gettin raised right now and i turned them of as soon as i got home, the temp is droppin, glad to hear it wont kill anything, they dont look freaked out or anything. but needed to ask, only my second day having the tank! haha so i was scared. ill put it up 12inches and if it keeps happining then ill sell these lights and get some Uber sweet LEDs. Thank you all very much for all your support!

is this tank cycled? if its only 2 days old was it a full setup somewhere else or all new....being uncycled could definitely hurt the fish more than the temp

I bought the tank off a fellow shipmate of mine who is moving across the US, from start of break down at his house, to fully set up at mine was <5 hours, all teh rock stayed submerged in water, along with all teh corals and everything else. 2 days before the move i brought the RO/DI unit home and made 110 gallons of saltwater so 98% of the water is brand new. I went shopping today for a test kit and got a API saltwater master test kit so 48 hours after move perameters are:

    pH: 8.4
    Ammonia: 0ppm
    Nitrite: 0ppm
    nitrate: 0ppm
