Just before someone tells me I made a mistake, I thought I beat you to it.:)

I know sand should be used as a substrate in a salt water aquarium. I used fine gravel.

As a result I am finding it difficult to find cleaners. Nassarius snails cannot borrow into it.

Any idea what will work ? I'll ask my reef store to bring in some.If you do have an idea, I have a 10 gallon nano. How many would I need?

    Thanks.

if its a 10G nano you won't need much....the best substrate to use in my opinion is the fine aragonite....it will yeild the most surface area, supports the proper PH levels, has the best buffering capacity, will absorb and remove nitrates, nitrite, ammonia and other toxins. All around its the stuff to use. you could also use crushed coral but the snails wont like it as much. Also the aragonite has elements and minerals your aquarium will need to be successful.

You would only need 1 bag...usually they come in 30lb bags. The amount you want in your tank depends on what you want to do...i have a deep sand bed 4'' and it's benifical to have a deep sand bed to aid in water quality...the substrate will help the whole system break down and absorb wastes and excess food that would ordinarily build up and lead to poor water

Thanks Divott. I would like that.

I was told by my reef store to never use a syphon on my substate. Perhaps he is only referring to sand. What do you think ?

Thanks for all your help. I love this site !

I would use a siphon, or just replace the gravel with sand, in that size tank it's not very difficult.

I don't know how to contact John, the reef keeper, but, if you're listening, I could use your help.
