ich and mushrooms??

    question.....

    my local fish place...has some ich in their tanks...all the tanks get the same water...so each tank uses the same filtration system...etc...

    they have some blue/purplish mushrooms that i want...he said he is treating tanks..but i know how the ich parasites life cycle is..

    so my dilemma is..i want the mushrooms..but am worried about contaminating my tank with free floating ich parasite then it gets on my fish...
    i know from my readings that the parasite is sensitive to HYPOsalinitity..so should i dip or let the new mushrooms set in plain r/o water for a period of time like 10 minutes????????????????

    An iodine dip should rid them of ich. I believe is is standard to use 15-20 drops iodine for a liter of water. Leave them in there for about 15 minutes.

    IMO though I would not risk it. He cant possibly be treating the tanks with mushrooms in them. Any treatment that will work would also kill the shrooms. Whole thing sounds a bit fishy (no pun intended) to me.

    theres always ich in and on everything for most fish stores. theres probably a very high chance you have it in your tank right now! its just a small amount though because your fish are healthy enough to fight it off. ich is always there and only "comes out" when the fish are exhibiting a larger amount of stress than usual

    If the LFS has ich and is supposedly treating for it, they would most likely use copper which as Mike said would be toxic to all inverts. I wouldn't do a freshwater bath on the mushrooms since inverts have a very poor ability to osmoregulate and fresh water baths cause their cells to rupture (thats why people use freshwater baths on fish to treat ich). To be really safe, you can set up a small seperate quarantine system with just the mushrooms and keep it there for the entire life cycle of a cryptocaryon parasite before introducing the coral to your tank. I dip all corals in an iodine solution like TM Pro Coral Cure before adding them to my tank to prevent things like flatworms etc from being introduced.
