they are basically littleparasites that dig inside fishes skin, feed and fall off. The most effective way i've found to get rid of it, is to go to the fish store find a copper medication. I used mardel copper safe. Treat the fish for two weeks, fish that are small or severely affected might not survive. make sure you wait atleast two weeks before putting all your fish back in otherwise they will just get it all over again and the cycle will just keep repeating its self until all your fish die. Fish get ick by other infected fish most of the time they are diseased from your lfs and they spread it to all other fish in your DT in a matter of weeks.

hope this helps follow the instructions and all will be good again.

Ich is not the end of all fish. My tank contracted Ich from a LFS fish purchase on more than one occasion & as of yet I have not lost a single fish to Ich & remarkably I have never used an Ich treatment.
It normally develops on stressed fish which is why it often comes from your LFS! The small White spots contain tiny bacteria that either burrow their way out of the fish or are scraped off when the fish rubs it's self against things to relieve irritation. The little White sack then bursts allowing loads more bacteria to infect the fish again! The cycle continues & Ichs numbers multiply.
When using copper based treatments you have to consider the repercussions! Copper based products are like nukes to you marine environment if you keep anything more than fish in it. Copper will kill your corals, hermit crabs, shrimp, sea stars & any other type of invert you may have.

+1 on the effectiveness to kill the bacteria but if like myself you have a reef environment then copper is not an option. As with most things prevention is better than cure!
I have a few things in place that so far have kept all 22 of my fish alive when Ich hit my tank. Firstly is to try & get the fish as healthy as possible, a healthy fish is more likely going to be able to fend off the bacteria as it will have a healthy slime layer, Good quality food & healthy feeding regime. I also dose my tank directly with garlic on a daily basis to help promote feeding - "2 drops a day keeps Ich away & let's all my happy lil fish have fun & play" little moto I have there for garlic in my tank lol :D

A UV steriliser running 24/7 if you have Ich in your tank to kill of any bacteria that passes through it (bare in mind this is not a cure on it's own as you cannot guarantee that all water will go through the UV & kill all the bacteria. That's pretty much impossible)

Finally increased flow is a good idea. The bacteria can only swim in free water for something like either 3 hours or 3 days (someone may be able to confirm that for me) the longer you can keep it suspended the more chance it will die before infecting you fish!

I have read about people increasing water temp also as this increases the process of the bacteria & almost shortens their life span but I don't think the it's a brilliant option unless accompanied by some of the above methods.

I hope some of this helps :D

Nearly forgot 2 things lol real workers in the tank that help out a lot.
Skunk cleaner shrimp are great. They will pick off & eat the little sacs on larger fish & stop them from infecting the tank & a cleaner wrasse is also a great addition again they are best for larger fish but are both an important part of my defence :D
