I'm confused!?

I am not an expert and never had a coral or an anemone, but if what you have is four 65 watts = 260 watts total for a 55 gal tank, then it's only 4.73 watts per gallon and I think that's too little for anemones.

I think other hard corals can get away with modern light if you have THE perfect/ideal water, but I think the anemone is not so forgiving.

 

well i think our biggest mistake was thinking the people at Nahacky's (LFS) wouldnt give us wrong info....

The tank is not as new as I thought. But when you said you took it right out of the bag and then right in the tank, does that mean you didn't acclimate the anemone at all?

 

We floated the bag, which is what the guy at Nahacky's said. Although I always like to do the drip method, my husband doesnt. Do you think that could have killed him? Also i forgot to say that the lights are PC, and we have 4 lunar lights. Also the tank is more long and shallow than tall and deep. Are the lights not strong enough? Another thing that Im wondering about- We had a lettuce nudibranch that is now MIA- I wonder if the anemone ate it and that maybe the nudibranch was poisinous to him? I am so frustrated with everything that we were told by Nahackys, although my husband still thinks they would not give us bad info i am doubtful.

 

Floating the bag does absolutely nothing, except for getting the temp in the bag the same as the tank. I am not sure but I think that takes forever. I Always use the drip method for everything. Perhaps that is what your anemone is going through, an acclimation period, which is very stressful but it also might not make through. How is it now?

 

Not good, it looks real flat and deflated. Do you think if he ate the nudibranch it would hurt him? He looked closed up when we first got him, but then before bed he was open and looked great. He stayed that way until the next evening. Thats when he started to get all nasty looking again, and has been so ever since. I read that some nudibranchs can be bad for anamone's but of course nahackys said he wouldnt hurt him, so i dunno. Maybe that night that he looked so good he he ate the nudibranch. And since it takes anemones so long to respond to both positive and negetive stimuli, maybe thats why it took so long for him to start looking nasty again? Also do you think our light are sufficient? Thanks for trying to help me figure this out. I just want to know where we went wrong. I do know we wont be floating anymore bags-from now on drip method only.

 

Im not sure if your anemone would have eaten that soon after being place in your tank. Anemone usually take a 3-4 days to even pick a spot to settle in the tank. Do you know if your nudibranch was in you tank when you placed the anemone there. The lighting in the tank is OK. Your anemone would most likely got to the highest point after a few days. When was your last water change? Do you notice anything picking at it?

 

The last time I saw the nudibranch was the day we brought home the anemone, he was in the glass. Now I havent seen him in days. The last water change was on Saturday. And I havent seen anything messing with him. I honestly am starting to think that the nudibranch had something to do with it.
Even that site you keep posting for me ( that i had already found and read before all this) says some nudibranchs are poisenious for anemone's. Now I'm just trying to find a good book on them so i can know for sure. I read a few, but i want a real good one.

I have a condylactus, a rose bubble tip and a large carpet anemone.
You have to give it some time to see if it will pull out of this slump that it is in. Sometimes there is no Cure, so to speak for what ails anemones.
It is good that you have researched and know what the proper care and feeding of your anemone is. Kudos and Karma to you.
If it starts to melt down it is time to pull it out of the tank

I on the other hand, did not acclimate my anemones except for getting the temperature the same.(bag float for 20 minutes) Everyone of mine lives and thrives. Some of us just have dumb luck Although I would not do that now, I have in the past.

Well we decided to take him out of the tank because he is so flat and deflated and hasnt moved or squirmed at all in a day. We went to nahackys today to test the water again- all is ok - and saw that some of their anemones looked like ours. They were real nasty, at least 3 of them. One of them I am sure is dead. So I think he may have already been doomed when we got him. I thank everyone for the info. When we feel ready for another one we are going to get a much darker one, as this one was so pale, just like all the other nasty ones that we saw at the lfs today. Maybe they were bleached (lacking zooxanthellae) and already on the way out. I think next time we are going to try to order from Dr fosters and Smith (LiveAqauria.com) and pray for a better outcome.
