Foxfaces can grow to 9 inches and need at least a 70 gallon aquarium.;)

While a foxface is smaller than the yellow tang, I would urge against both (or any large fish for that mater) in an aquarium of this size. A standard 55 gallon tank is only one(1) foot wide, which does not provide much room for turning around. Foxface(s) and tangs are both quite active fishes. It hurts me to see a fish just swim back and forth in a tank all day (because the person doesn't have a large or long enough tank).

I also feel that restricting fish to an exact tank size (gallons/volume) is too strict and simplistic of guidelines for keeping (and when not to keep) a fish. Different fish have different behaviors; therefore, the actual tank dimensions and aquascape should be a part of the deciding factor.

    I think I agree.

    How does this sound:

2 x Clowns, Flame Angel, Fire Fish, Royal Dottyback, 2 x Blue/Green Chromis, and two different small gobies?

How big is 'pretty big' ? What brand and model/version is your skimmer?

Miracle mud or other substrate(s) will help with some biological filtration in the sump/refugium, but will not ultimately change the amount of fish you are able to fit in your tank.

    Consider this:

    2 clowns
    Flame Angel
[STRIKE]Yellow Tang[/STRIKE] <-- too large when full grown (nearly 1 foot in length)
Royal Dottyback <-- can become aggressive / territorial, but just watch out
    Blue/Green Chromis
    Diamond Goby

Edit: I would maybe get a chromis to hopefully pair up with the one you have.
