Thinking of switching to this salt and wondering how many gallons a 50 gal bag will make at 1.026?

    Wouldn't that make 50 gallons? :-/

I think they typically use 35ppt (Around 1.026) for their results.

instant ocean is rated to mix at 1.021. so when you get it up to 1.026 you will have used more salt. So its not actually 50 gallons worth unless mixed at 1.021, but its probably not too far off. maybe few gallons.

A 50 lb bag will make about 44 gallons at that salinity.

My Instant Ocean gives 50g mixed to a s.g. of 1.022.
This means that for 1.026, you should only get 42.3g.

    Could this be done?

Middle of next month I'm upgrading to a 50 gallon from my 29 and only need to make a lot water once. So in not having to buy extra buckets, could I disolve double the amount of IO in a 5 gallon bucket? This would give me a 10 gallon mix? Then all I would have to do is to dilute it with RODI. Anyone have any experience doing that?

sure you could do that. but then you just have to remix and retest it. everybody wants some magic new salt mixing/measuring system. there really isnt one simple easy answer. even if you mix it the same way every time, i would still suggest testing before adding to the DT.

You can get a bag of salt for about 24-30 bucks at PetCO its the instant ocean stuff, its actually a bigger plus bag for 60 gallons, I've done all 50 and my waters right at about 1.025, although I'm planning on going to buckets soon.

Instant Ocean is terrible. I switched to Brightwell and the results were amazing!

+1 I like the Brightwell. Don't take a scoop in your hand and put it in the water. It gets hot when it mixes! I don't know if it gets hot enough to cause a burn and I don't want to find out. Don't be afraid to rinse some off your hands, just don't hold a handful underwater.
