I currently have a Blueline 40 HD-x External pump one my 220 gallon FOWLR tank. The reason why I went with an external was because I didn't want to add heat to the tank with an internal, being that I do not have a chiller. To be honest I think its a great pump, very powerfull. But I can't seem to get over the constant HHUUUUUMMMMMMM!!!! lol.. Its driving me nuts! I did place a few pieces of rubber underneath the pump to limit vibration and noise but it's still pretty loud. The tank is in my living room and annoying me when I watch TV. :-/.. I'm guessing all externals give off this noise. I figure I'm just not used to it because most of my friends operate internal pumps, and thiers you barely hear.

Are all external pumps going to give you the humming noise? And what do most of you reccomend.. Internal or External, and Why?

We use a lot of externals, and some are noisier than others. Even different size pumps from the same mfr. can vary in noise factor.

Also, FWIW, external pumps also add heat to your water...it's inevitable, altho they also dissipate some of their heat thru the case and into the air.

What brand/model pump do you have?

Are you using rigid PVC or soft tubing for your plumbing?

If you're using rigid, are you using your stand to support the plumbing, and if so, are you isolating the pipework from the stand?

For under pump isolation, I recommend Sorbothane hemispheres over anything else.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know that external's also produce heat.

I have a Blueline 40 HD-x pump. I am using rigid PVC for the plumbing and none of the plumbing is touching the stand. There is no vibration noise coming from the PVC or the bottom of the pump. The noise comes from the pump itself..

the eheims can be run both ways so you can choose....that way if you ever change you dont need a different pump

I originally purchased two Ehiem 5000's (Which I still have) but my friend talked me in to going with the Blueline external. I may switch back.
