I bought a 125 gallon tank with all of the accesories, lights, sump, etc.. It came with 2 coalife power compact lighting fixtures. He had 2 daylight bulbs which are 96w a piece and 2 actinic bulbs 96w a piece.
Is this going to be enough light for coral? I just want to keep some zoas, shrooms, and LPS. No SPS. Do I add up the actinic bulbs into the total wattage? And if so I have a little over 3watts/gallon. Is this enough?

for those corals, its prob close to the minimum. but should do the trick. some you may need to keep a bit higher up.

Yes, you add the actinic into the total. As you describe the setup, although it depends upon tank depth (which I'm guessing is b/w 24 and 28"), it should be minimally ample. If as you say, zoanthids, shrooms, and softies are your only aim, you should be ok. Remember, you'll be limited, and once bitten by the bug, it's hard not to expand one's horizons.

Since you got everything as a package, it's probably a decent start.

Keep in mind, too. Watts per gallon is not very concise a description. It mostly depends upon the height of the tank. If you have a shallow tank from top to bottom, a much lower WPG figure might be more than ample.

Good luck, and welcome to the addiction. Bring your wallet! :)

Ya i feel the addiction coming already. I find myself lookig at coral online quite a bit. The lights were sitting right on topof the tank, like 2-3 inches off the water. It was raising the temp so I put the lights on 1.5 inch blocks and the temperature is steady now. So the light is pretty close to the water.

mount your lights 4" above water.. stack your live rock up to like 10" or so from water line. and plant your corals on the top row.. you can find some low light stuff, and probly be fine with mounting them in the mid-lower part of your tank.

I have a few sps with my pc lights. but I do have them within 10-12" of my lights. they seem to be growing.. only had them 1 week though. and lots of current/power heads and 5.5 watts per gallon.

ok, so put the coral toward the top of the tank. What about a brain or chalice, acans? the stuff you would usually put on the substrate.

With chalice and acans, I think you will be ok. Even the brains. I would supplimentally feed all of these but it's worth a shot. The best way to test this is to get a cheap, run of the mill chalice or acan frag (as cheap as they come anyway, they are mostly all expensive) and put it down there and give it a month or two. If It were me that's what I would try. Seariously though, you are gonna wanna consider more lighting.
