kool ill have a look at that link sounds interesting

i remember 10 years ago before finding nemo when having a saltwater tank was virtually unheard of you would get hand fulls of everything for almost nothing but finding nemo did create a "fad" and im sure alot of marine animals died because of it i think the worst part of it is there arent to many aquacultured corels in aus if at all so the great barrier reef takes a bashing to supply people who do actually know what to do with the stuff and have no intention of researching a little, would be great to aquaculture some of this stuff and give back to the reefs that have lost so much from over "fishing":-/

I was at Petco the other day picking up a few things and decided to walk by the saltwater tanks. There was a lady with 3-4 kids all staring at the tanks and talking about which fish they should buy. I noticed a fish bowl in their cart, so I asked what they planned on keeping in it. I was shocked when she said my kids want a Nemo and Dory to put on the kitchen table!!!!! I explained to her, as politely as possible, that she would be lucky if the poor fish lasted more than a day and that they really needed to be in an actual aquarium. She told me she didn’t care and that she would buy more fish if that is what her kids wanted. At that point I walked away absolutely furious at the ignorance of some people.

I too sometimes sad about disposable pets

    HI,
ever go to animal control there's pedigree dogs there that either ran away or didn't hold their water for 12 hours a day while their owner was living their life, my neighbors have a dog that lives in the garage they put him in the yard chained to tree while they clean the garage out all that pee and p0op.
my other neghbor has a nice basset hound very sweet animal it lives in the back yard and cries for attention pretty much most of the day. They have a couple kids and don't have time for it, I was thinking about kidnaping the Dog this week end so he could sit with us on the deck while they were gone all day with their boat. We don't talk much to our neighbors we never see them either.
I ve seen compulsive purchases for pythons and Boa's simply to watch them kill things, usally the food kills the snake sooner or later.
Its pretty disgusting how we care for animals and too think we are the custodians of planet earth. Be glad I don't make the decisions about if the human species is worth keeping. Imagine if you were in another Galaxy trying to decide if this Planet is civilized or stil in the Stone AGE..

Everything this thread is saying is true and the sad part is that its happening more often each day :-[. recently went to my lfs which is about an hour and a half away and had to wait for 20 minutes befor i could get someone to get me some snails. they took so long cause a lady bought a ten gallaon tank some salt and a bag of colored gravel and was asking for a powder tang. They asked what tank she had and she said it was at the counter, the manager nicely explained that she would need a tank at least 10x the size of the one she had. and then asked if she even hads a filter. she replied "theres no filters in the ocean and you dont see all of the fish dieng there". The worst part was that she had to be allowed to buy it even if the employees refused to. i bet hes dead, and she hasn't noticed. Why not actually take 5 minutes to find out what it needs to live and how to run a saltwater aquarium.     actually i am hiring a group of german mercenaries to "infiltrate" her home steal the tang and bring it to me where i will either provide a home for it or give it to someone who can!!!!!!!!!!!!:-/

 Wow! Did this thread ever get off topic. --- But excellent points raised! - Certainly some strong feelings among us on the responsiblity of owning pets. Bet most of us have seen examples that make us scream, cry or shout.

Please someone start a new thread on "responsible reefkeeping", think it would get lots of activity given the responses here.

In Petsmart recently, my son saw a South American Dragon Goby, which dwell in brackish water. The clerk had no clue and told us it was a saltwater fish! I suggested to her that if she was unfamiliar with a fish and/or proper care therefor, that she might consider a little surfing on the Internet to make educated recommendations to customers.

All of thestories told makes me very sad and very angry. What would have happened if an LFS clerk refused to sell the powder tang to the "lady," besides losing a sale? Couldn't "...right to refuse service ..." apply to pets, as well? The bigger question is how can education of the masses be accomplished?

The problem is that education can only happen if one is willing to listen. (and hopefully, ask questions) The woman buying the tang was obviously uninterested in listening.

"The problem isn't what we don't know, it's what we know for certain that just an't so."
