    Clean the Blue Tuxedo

    Interesting - I just noticed that my Blue Tuxedo Urchin is carrying a load of Chaeto as part of it's camouflage (I wonder where it came from). Guess I'll have to give him a cleaning whilest I add my corals today.

    Sunday workout

    It took most of the day, but the new corals are in. I did a major water change also. The dipping process of the corals seem to take forever, but after seeing what came off in the process, it was time well spent.

    After seeing the status of the glass cover when I removed it, I decided not to put it back on. The down side - I discovered that I needed a heater to maintain the tank temp. Apparently the fans cooling the T5s do a lot more surface cooling than I thought they would. Installed one of the 250 watts upstream in the sump and connected it to the chiller. It took overnight, but temp is back to normal. I guess I'll be monitoring this for a few days.

    Too late to take any pics - I'll do some this weekend.

    Surprised at cooling effect

    I must say that I am really surprised at the cooling effect of having the glass canopy off. I had two fans cooling my lights, and I've had to cut back to one so the heater can maintain the temp. I have the fan on with the actinics, but I can see that I will have to move it to one of the T5s. Gone through most of a 5 gallon reservoir since Sunday. Partly because I was running both cooling fans. I'll have to refill and track over the next week again. With the glass canopy on, I was using maybe 2 gallons a week. But the chiller was running a lot. Today, the chiller didn't even kick on once. It will be interesting to see what the temp chart for the day is now that I am closer to dialing it in. One or 1.5 to 2 five gallons of RO/DI water is sure a lot cheaper than running a 1/4 horse chiller two or three times an hour. I thought my salinity might suffer with all that water running through, but several tests reveal that it is right on 1.025 :) Have to say that I am very pleased with the Tunze Osmolator Universal 3155 I'm using for ATO.

    Video available

    Finally finished editing the video I took on 30 July. It is below. Started the green algae on the glass phase yesterday. Cleaning twice a day. I've been giving the Tangs Nori every other day. Think I'll cut back to every third day and see if that helps. Water params look great:

    • Amonia - 0
    • Nitrite - 0
    • Nitrate - 0
    • Phosphate - 0
    • Salinity - 1.025
    • Calcium - 420
    • dKH - 8/143.2
    • Ph - 8.02 (2 AM) to 8.22 (4 PM)
    • Temp - 78.7 --> 79
    And now for the video:
