Is it OK to use Koralia pumps as wavemakers? Does it hurt them to be continually turning on and off or are they meant to be constantly running. Mine occasionally chatter at startup, but I am worrying that I may be damaging them.

I have my Koralias set up with a wavemaker also...wondering the same thing. The propellers in my koralia 1s did start getting stuck so I had to rig up something to keep them away from the slots in the front end. They are definitely not made to be used with a wavemaker but it works for me.

The original Koralia powerheads are not meant to be used as a wavemaker. They have designed a specific type of controllable powerhead that powers down to about 20% power, and then back up to 100%. They are meant to be used with a Koralia wavemaker, either the 2 port or 4 port deluxe model.

    Hope that helped.

when i was looking at wavemaking prior to discovering the vortech line, my LFS had told me to go with the 'magnum' line of pumps if i wanted to use a 3rd party controller. for example a jbj controller with two k5's plugged in would be able to simulate a 'wave'.

i was also told that only the 12v koralias were controllable beyond the magnum line. just what i was told, though.

I have two koralia 2's in my 55 running on an ocean pulse wavemaker. I have had no issue at all, other than a few clicks now and then, this has worked fine for me over a year.

My LFS had a few K4's on timers and despite my advice not to have them set up that way one of the propellers eventually launched through the protective housing and another had the motor burned up.

Ok now I am a little worried. I have mine set up to run 3 min each. Do you think this is a good time or should I run it shorter/longer?

I'm using K2's and K1's with a wavemaker and they have been running fine for about 3 months now. I wonder if the issues your LFS had are just because the K4's use so much power, and are thus more susceptible to problems when being constantly turned on and off.

I have a K2 and a K3 and i turn them off to feed my fish. The K3 gives me problems ALL the time! and i never have any problems with my K2 powering on and off.

My k6 works great on and off. My K4s are too noisy for that and probably wouldn't last as long.
