So I was going to get aquafuges for my seahorse tank and my reef tank. However, I had two old regular powerfilters from freshwater tanks. I needed pods for the seahorses as they couldn't make it in the DT and macros in the reef. So some of you may know that in those HOB powerfilters the water is taken in from an intake in the tank into one chamber, overflows into a larger chamber where the filter media is suppose to be, then dumped back into the tank through an overflow system. What I did for the seahorse tank was I took out all the filter media, put in some sand and a piece of LR and will add some LR rubble. This will house pods to reproduce and overflow into the DT. I didn't need to put a light on it because there are macros in the DT but for the reef I will do the same and add a small cheap light to grow macros. Its in essence the same as an aquafuge, just a little smaller and WAY cheaper. Heres a picture without flow so you can see it. As you can see the water comes into the chamber on the left, through the pod chamber and back into the tank like a commercial HOB fuge.

Thanks. Good to know my idea might work. Seems that happens all too infrequently...

One question. Will the LR rubble that I put in be sufficient in pod numbers or should I order some on top of that?

To be safe, id order some and "seed" the DYI aquafuge, from then on you will be fine. Better to play it safe then sorry IMHO:p
