I've read several reviews on LED lighting on the web and they say it gives the shimmer effect of MH. Is this true and if so could a fellow add a couple of white ones to a t5 fixture to add some shimmer to the tank? In all I want the effect of MH with the convenience of t5.

    Welcome to 3reef.

The LED can overcome the T5HO lack of shimmer as stated but you will most likely need as many rows of LED as you have tubes of T5HO.

Maybe a custom strip tucked behind your existing t5 would do the trick or possibly stunner strips running the length of the fixture would do it. they just need to be fairly powerful or they could be drowned out by the t5's.

Yes, this idea should work fine. As mentioned above, you might want as many led strips as you have T5HO bulbs. If not, just be sure to put the LED strip (if only one strip) in front of the T5 tubes to be sure the shimmer is more prominent.

convenience my friend is all led's, no bulbs to change for 5-10 years, and complete controllability of the color spectrum at your leisure;)

But yeah, you'll prob need a decent amount of leds to add overcome the T5's. What T5 system do you have, how many bulbs and what kind of bulbs and colors?
