Old playing cards make great shims for your stand, if I understand you correctly.

You can smim and trim along the edge of your stand or even the foot if it is a pedestal. It is more for esthetics than functionality, your choice.

The main reason you want your tank level is to make sure that all corners of the tank are touching the stand. Run a piece of paper around the tank, if there are any gaps where the paper can get through you need to fill them, playing cards work well. If there are any gaps, especially at the corners, stuff them with playing cards and then take a box cutter and cut off the parts sticking out.

My tank is about 1/4 to 1/2 inch unlevel, and so are most peoples.

It's not about weight balance, if it was most peoples aquascapes would look a little different.

Just make sure that all corners of the tank touch the stand completely and you should be fine.
