Compact Fluorescent Aquarium Lighting: Coralife Aqualight Double Compact Fluorescent Strip Lights

After then long and strenuous search for a new light for my 3 gallon I maybe, just maybe, have found something. The tank opening is only 12 inchs so it is though man. I would love to keep sps, particularily a pink or green birds nest. Would this light have the output for this?

I know t5's are much better but i cannot find a fixture that small for the life of me.

    Thanks in advance!

Three gallon huh? Halides out of the question? Dunno if it'd create too much heat but it's an idea. Just a thought, have you got any fish in there? I can't for the life of me keep fish alive in my 10 - so I just let it be corals and I love it. Oh, and I don't know if PC's give you enough light for SPS.

I've been looking into something interesting lately. Consider the jump in light output per space you get when going form T8's to T5's. Now imagine the light output jump you will get from going with T2's. This is only a single bulb fixture, but wow does it look promising.

    10-Inch T2 Under Cabinet Light

Maybe two fixtures taken apart and retroed into some kind of hood. with the size of these bulbs you could have a four bulb fixture over your tiny tank.

I still haven't found a source for specific color temp bulbs though.

Wow. That is cool. Keep me posted on findings. But this light should support a birdsnest correct? the tank has only about 7 inches of water in it.

Yes it does and it is twice the price. I've seen a three gallon tank with the 18 watt light on it and it is more than enough light. The higher the watts the more heat. On a three gallon tank, the light you are looking at would heat it up pretty fast. On a 3 gallon tank the 18 watt light would give you 6 watts per gallon which is way above reccomended.
