Just started my 2nd tank (a normal 55g). I don't know much about lighting, so im sorry for the amount of questions in the post.

    I was running:

Hagen T5HO Glo 2x bulb that just broke. I will be taking this fixture back to my LFS as I purchased this not even a month ago. Something made a popping noise and the fixture wont turn back on.

    The question:

I want to grow higher light corals such as Acropora and understand that 2x bulbs wont work. I was gonna add 2x or 4x more bulbs to my system because I have an old empty 4x bulb fixture from Current USA. One set of Hagen ballasts and 2x bulbs would cost me $110. The current fixture that broke costs around $205.

Or should I return the broken system and try to rewire my own 4x bulb system in the old current lighting fixture.

The LFS sells the Marineland Leds as well. Should I just upgrade to the led system for around $400-$450 (48"-60" fixture). Or should I put my money towards a different lighting system.

Note: I like having an open top, so no canopy.

    $315 For a 4x bulb system
    $425 For a 6x bulb system
    $400-450 for Led system
