I was originally planning on going with a 20g high tank which was 24" long, but after doing some reading I am thinking about going with 29g which is 30" long due to a little more horizontal swim space as well as a little more water capacity and room for hardware. I have a concern about the lighting. I was planning on going with a 24" 4x24W light with extension brackets but that would leave ~3in of water etc... on either side that is not directly under the light. For LPS, softies and possibly later on SPS would this be an issue?

That would be fine... that's what most people do with T5s over a 30" tank. The problem with 30" T5 fixtures is upgrading from the cheap OEM bulbs. :)

Yea I read on here earlier it was hard to find decent 30" bulbs, that was another concern i had about the 29g. I want enough light, but I want to be able to get decent light.
