I am thinking of putting Metal Halides on my tank, however I am not looking forward to spending $500 on a fixture and bulb. I have a 90 Gallon reef tank with compact flourescents now, but not sure if I am getting the right amount of light. I know MH's are the best but they are also the most expensive. Does anybody have an alternative or at least maybe suggest cheaper MH's?

You could try T5s. They are quite a bit cheaper and will be plenty for your 90. Also you could try getting some retros or even some used ones for a fairly good price. We don't have much action on this site for classifieds by you could try ebay or kijiji or something of the sort. GL!

Please excuse my ignorance, but what are retros?
