I am not that happy about the LR placement after having to move pieces of rock around. If I was to take the 46 gallon apart and and redo it would my nitrates go higer than the 5 that it is now? I heard that if you stir up any sand I might get higher nitrates.

Move it around, if you stir up the sand it might release some crap into the water but your filters will take care of it. how old is your tank? i've moved my LR around many time w/ no repercussions.

It sounds like you're still cycling? If you have any livestock then there is added concern i.e- have you been feeding them (is there food sediment in the sandbed,) anyone died (including the critters in the LR.) Like Nunch said, try not to stir up the sand bed too much. A little is inevidable but I also fiddled with my rockscape 3 or 4 times before it resembled something that I could live with. Don't drop rocks on fish. Make sure there are none hiding in the rock if you remove it from the tank (I had a goldtail damsel hide out in a piece that was out of water for a few minutes. He's ok though) If you're still cycling then it's best to do it now, believe me... the wasted time and worry when it comes to not being happy with your set up could be easily avoided in the early stages of tanklife.

My tank is 1.5 yrs old. I had a recent bryopsis problem which is fixed. I had to remove some rock and rearange now I am not that happy. I used to have 0 nitrates now I have 5ppm nitrates. 2 pieces of rock I scrubbed and boiled. I also stirred up a little sand. I would like to change the arrangement but I have the corals and fish to worry about. Also I don't want any more nitrates from changing it either. I only have a Aqua Remora Skimmer and a Power Filter that I was using phosban but I took it out now.

Ever tried self sustaining your fuge? I don't want to pirate this thread but maybe you could move your live stock and get your tank squared away then move them back.

What do you mean by self sustaining the fuge?

It's probably a bit more difficult than I'm making it sound but it's possible if you're dead set on partial tear-down of the tank. I'm thinking seriously about setting up a 40g refugium and letting everything hang out there for about a week. Setting up an old filter and treating that like my main tank. Meanwhile I can treat and filter the 75g show tank and once it's all done doing it's thing I can set everthing back into it in a way that i'm really happy with. Basically it's easier than acclimating my livestock to someone elses tank and worrying with that whole hassel. It's always a good idea to have a quarentine tank I think.

5ppm is nothing, I've been around 20ppm for about a year now. everything's thriving, nothing's suffering.

Yea, I know but it's all I have. I'm thinking of closing off about 6 inches (from the bottom)
and then baffeling all but a 12x10x12(or so) section for the actual fuge itself.
