Is your refugium cycled? I could but a 20 gallon tank and do a big water change and use that water for the temporary 20 gallon. Get a heater and then rearrange the rock then put everything back. I know I will stir up alot of sand which will probably make the nitrates go up.

The idea of send/return from/to the w/d is interesting. the w/d is old so it's only around for a biological medium. Adam, you could try that. I dunno how pleased all of your livestock would be in a 20. It only needs to be for a day, two or three tops. I don't see why it couldn't be done. Maybe do that water change now and take a bit of water out after two days of cycle, then do the same for the next two or three weeks until your 20 is full. I'm just thinking about removing almost half of your water at one time... could do more damage.

I would'nt have to fill up the whole 20 gallon tank. Just enough to cover the corals. 10 gallons max. I just cant stir up any sand or else problems will happen
