sorry but i have to disagree with you on this one, it should not take that long. I added a huge piece of ceramic base eco rock and it has become live in about 4 months. I would assume the length would be determined on how much live rock you are seeding the base rock for, but if went with base rock i don't think it would take a year to become live.

mine has been in my tank for 8-9 months it's barely live. I think your right about the amounts of it you use. and water params.

The important part is the nitrifying bacteria which will colonize the rocks in 2 - 3 weeks. Everything else is mostly aesthetic and only a mild indicator of a healthy tank. :)

x2 Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it isn't "live." And I agree that it takes many months sometimes for it to start growing coralline.

Even with live rock, you are going to want to check your params for a couple weeks and watch for an ammonia spike to show that its initial cycle is complete. There will be some die off regardless of how careful you are IME.

Can I clean the rock? Get all the algae and the black stuff on it off?

Yes. Again, just keep it wet. You can put SW in a spray bottle and squirt it occasionally.
