So I have spent the last few hours reading the forums on live rock. Many of my questions have been answered. My main one is why my rock is turning white which had my greatly concerned. Now I know that it's normal.

So I have four questions I can't find the answers to are the following.

I have about 10 pounds of live rock in there (so little for the sake I didn't want to add 150lbs and learn I was doing it wrong - I have every intention of adding more) I have four rocks in there totaling my 10 pounds. No fish, only sand, salt, and rock.

When I added the rock in my tank, I just added it in there without cleaning it. I read today that people lightly scrub it fresh water or salt water with a tooth brush or something else light. I didn't do that. Is that something critical to do? Should I take it out and do the cleaning of it? I don't see much growing on there. There are a few things that look like they could be growing, but I think it's still to soon to tell. I'll post some pictures either today or tomorrow of what I think might be growth.

My second question is do I need to be feeding these rocks? I know nothing like shrimp, or regular fish food, but I did read one time - and I couldn't find the post again - that I need to be feeding the rock. Can someone tell me about the food. My rocks have been in there for about two weeks.

My third question is what does live health rock look like? I'm more concerned what I need to be looking for if my rock should be getting sick, or dying - if rock does that.

My last question is, it does seem like everyone's rock sprouts something live, be it good or bad, what time frame should I be seeing something sprout something living other then algae - which I don't see any of currently. (I think the white is dead algae)

a)scrubbing isn't necessary look out for aptasia tho.
b)live rock don't need food lol.
    c)depends whats growing on it.
    d) sometime in the first year.

I think I should explain live rock isn't really a living rock like a animal. It's called live rock for the bacteria it harbors, you can't see bacteria normally. So live rock can't die from normal circumstances(such as being kept moist, in proper salinity and temp, in general semi decent quality water).

Thank you. I knew the rock itself wasn't alive, but I know that things grow on it, the things that grow on it is I guess what I was aiming at as far as feeding.

Ok, I won't get to excited about things growing on my rock for months then.

    Thank you for the response.
