We have a 250 gal with the following livestock in it:

    1 cinnamon clown (large)
    1 3 stripe damsel
    1 yellow tail damsel
    1 lawnmower (pretty big)
    1 yellow tang
    1 six line
    2 purple urchins
    3 emerald crabs
misc snails and crabs, several small corals and frags (approx 5 or so)

What are our options for adding more compatable livestock to the tank? How many more fish can we get away with? Tank has been up for about a year now.

    Thanks in advance!

Some wrasses and another tang or two would be a pretty good add, IMO

Would love to add another tang or 2, but worried about them fighting and killing each other off?

You could easily have twice the number of fish mass you have now. You probably could add another species of tang, or a school of chromis or anthias. Let us know what fish you are interested in and we will give you the information you need.

1st congrats on having a very lightly stocked monster tank

Tangs , provided you dont add fish from the same genus and try and add ones with different body shape to your yellow, you should be OK after some initial "Im the daddy in here" display IME

You should be Ok with that sizes tank as long as you do not add a tang with same body shape.

so a blue regal would work ok? Almost got one 2 weeks ago, a pretty little one, but backed out as I didn't know enough to be sure they would be ok together

They should Work. I kept a Regal with my Purple Tang in the 120 Before Trading the regal in. They got along just great. And Purple Tangs have a little be more ill mannered behavior.

    I agree with Red Gambit

A yellow and a Regal is a combo that worked for me some time ago
and in my case Yellow was the resident and Regal was added, it was much smaller and the Yellow ignored it completely

Heres the thing with Tangs, You can basically add them with caution. Changing around the rockwork slightly and time with the lights off, usually 12-24 hours helps out a ton.

your Yellow Tang is a Zebrasoma flavescens, there are 5 basic groupings of Tangs

Zebrasoma - Sailfin Tangs, Purple Tangs, Yellow Tang, Gem Tang

Acanthurus - Achilles Tang, Powder Blue Tang, Powder Brown Tang, Convict Tang, Lieutenant Tang, Orangeshoulder Tang

Naso - Naso Tang, Blond Naso Tang, Unicorn Tang, Vlamingii Tang

Paracanthurus - Regal Tang, Yellow Bellied Regal Tang

Ctenochaetus - Chevron Tang, Two Spot Bristtletooth Tang, Kole Tang, Tomini Tang

Those are just some examples of the groups for you
