Not really sure what would make a good tank mate for a dwarf lion AND not be considered food AND be able to live long term in only 30 gallons. Maybe a dwarf angel of some kind?

That's what I was thinking. But then was turned on to the Valentini puffers, but as of late, I have decided against it.

30 gallon is too small for a dwarf lion

    Awesome.

Is this from experience? Over on nano-reef.com, they are having a lot of success with dwarves. And I haven't found anything stating that 30G was too small. Granted, it's the minimum requirement and I'm not thrilled about doing anything minimally.

Also, is your postulate based upon swimming space or the dilution factor? (Being 30G is a pollution sensitive ecos) that said, as my link elucidates, I have a 20G sump and a refugium.

Just questions...thanks for your input! :)

    Hi Dorian

nano - reef. com is a great site that is focused on the smaller tank set ups, and as such they will want to asses the boundaries of what these smaller tank set ups can accomodate

Lionfish in general are more tolerant of water quality issues and its a fact that Lionfish, Groupers and other large less sensitive fish species are the fish of choice for cycling very large aquariums - so A 6 inch lionfish in a 300 gallon tank would create no more elevated polution levels than a Damsel in a 20 gallon would create ( diluted waste by volume)

Packleader was implying that whilst a dwarf lionfish may survive in a 30 gallon tank
it would almost certainly have a better quality of life in a 60 gallon tank and even better again in a 100 plug gallon tank

they do need space to stretch out, they do need space to build up speed in order to capture prey - you may well be able to wean them onto dead foods in the reef, but the fish needs a chance to propel itself every now and again as it would in nature (It needs to be able to expand its wings and fly)

if we add the above comments to your desire to add further compatible fish

then going for a bigger tank (100 plus) - seems to me to be a solution that would be very suitable to you , you can then look at triggers, groupers (OK some get crazy big)

the bigger the tank, the better it is for both you, and whatever you decide to keep

I agree wholeheartedly with steve wright. Just because you can doesn't mean you necessarily should. The fish would survive but they wouldn't be too happy. On top of that I believe dwarf lions should be kept in groups, something not possible in a 30 gallon tank.

    Thanks Pack, Steve, LCP...

I truly agree with this sentiment. I do, and is why I am cautious with this endeavor.

The Fuzzy I have/had in mind was about 3", and I have known a professor to keep him in his office 29G nano pod/cube. I have read they are compatible in triplets and pairs when enough space is granted.

Happiness is key here, I wish all my fish to be healthy and live in serenity. I guess it offsets the daily injections of virulent parasites and bacteria into the tissues of healthy living clones (mice etc) then the vivisection and organ harvest at "the evil research lab" ....:-/:cry:

Thanks for the input guys. I was looking to add a "second" fish, now looks like I'm trying to add "a" fish.

    Maybe a school of damsels?

dorian - whatever you do keep, I have a feeling its going to be very well looked after

you have a great attitude and this is exactly what the hobby needs

I have also read about the tendency for them to be in groups ( did some research before posting ) a decent sized tank with a few of them in would be awesome I agree

I found that they do best in a group of 1 male and a few females min tank size repeatedly mentioned was 4ft ( thats a 55 or 60 gallon I think?)

damsels are nice enough for sure , as are clowns, grammas, dwarf angels, gobies, blennies and host of other fish I cant recall off the top of my head

30 gallon - with 20 gallon sump - 50 gallons , divide by 4 - 12 inches of fish, allowing for full adult size (I include sump as it does affect systems capacity to house fish)
