I was thinking about getting one. Lyretails are supposed to be one of the easiest. I know females will turn to male to replace the dominant male if it dies. If you have only one you would think it would turn male. Not sure though.

They are just gorgeous fish! They are so distinctive looking. One of my LFS has a tank with huge schools of different types of anthias and they are just amazing!

You just have to be careful which type you get, because I've been warned some are really hard to keep alive.

I had a pair of Purple Queen Anthias.

I fed multiple times a day initially. Once established to the tank, you can cut the feedings back. The more feedings they get, the more active they are in the tank.

You need to get high quality foods before you get the fish. They will not touch flake initially. Reef Nutrition, Hikari frozen, etc. When feeding, try to mimic live food. Put it in the fastest flow and let it blow past the fish. It does not take long for Anthias to starve. Start with the best and get them eating quickly.

These were my favorite fish in the tank. A heater malfunction during the transfer cooked them. Really ticked me off.

Not 100% if a single will turn male, but am pretty sure it will.

How long did you have the Purple Queen? I've seen them in the store(marked NFS) and the owner said pretty much don't even try it they're super hard to keep alive.
    Awesome looking fish though.

As far as Lyretails. After I move and reset up my tank that's something I want. A school of them.

I had a pink square that changed male to female. He was a lone fish. My overtemp disaster got him.

I had mine for just under a year. My LFS got in three of them. The first one died within two days at the store. One of the others wouldn't eat at first. Took Reef Nutrition to get it eating. Last one took right to frozen brine.

As for Lyrtails... Maldives, all the way. Much better coloring.
