Just started raiseing my magnesium, want to get it up to a more suitable level, everybody has different levels, my tank is a reef, so mag is a must, just curious as to where people keep there mag level, so let us know and if there is any particular reason why?

Just a side note, this poll is public so everybody will be able to see who and how much you voted...

I keep mine between 1500 and 1550. Reason being I like to keep my Ca levels between 460 to 480. By the book, your Ca:Mg ratio should be 1:3.25.

I like to keep my Ca that high because coraline grows best with the Ca around that level. I like coraline. And it doesn't hurt to have a little extra for the corals. I keep my dKH between 12 and 14.

So you can't keep your calcium between 460 to 480 unless the mag is over 1500?

has for the ratio 1:3.25., thats over my head, but very intersting, thanks for your input.

The ratio between Calcium and Magnesium levels is just a guideline to balance the two elements in your tank. If your Calcium level is 1, then your Mag should be 3.25. So if you are running 460 for Ca, just multiply that number by 3.25..

    (460)(3.25)=1495

So for a level of Ca being maintained at 460, your Mg should be kept at 1495. Give or take.

Yes the 3:1 ratio is at best a good "ball park" figure but it gets you in the proper range. Also, Coraline growth also depends on proper light spectrum. I have the best growth in my 14 gal. bio with regular old compacts and cal at 400 ppm then I ever get in the 55 gal. with cal at 420-450 and T5 lights.

Mine has been around 1300 to 1400ppm lately, since I've have neglected it a little. But honestly I have no adversed effect, at times I pump it up to around 1500ppm because
at times I limit to one wc every 3 weeks to a month. (not recommended)

12-14 dkh seems a lil high.i thought 13 and up is not good for corals. even heard someone say recently that a 13 dkh will brown sps quickly.

why go so high if it does not make a diff. in coral growth past a point. besides the lil extra to keep a buffer zone.

    i do 1400 mag, 9-10 dkh, 435-445 cal.

Yes, that is sound reasoning Bluefish, and the levels you posted here are shall we say "optimal".
