Two oh my hydor Evo powerheads which were less than a year old had their magnets swell up causing them to stop working within 2 days of each other. A well later my sedra pertain skimmer pump swelled up. I also think I got a minor shock reaching in the tank a few days ago. Any ideas what would cause the magnets to swell? Leaking voltage into the tank from something?

Sedra's are very well know for their impellers swelling. When I saw the title of the thread, that was the pump I expected to see. The Hydor is acutally the one that actually suprised me.

I've been running Evolutions for almost 3 years and Koralias in general much longer than that and never heard of a magnet swelling. Had plenty of pumps do that though including Via Aqua, Quiet One, Mag, Rio HyperFlo and a few others.

Contact Hydor Customer Support, Evolutions come with a two year written guarantee.

Hydor has already replaced the impellers, but logically there is most likely something causing this if it happens to three pumps, two different brands in the course of a week. Plus I think I got shocked.

I have had one Hydor impeller swell. There is most likely a case of some defects in the manufacture of the Hydor impellers. The Sedra I am not sure but most likely the same thing.

Have you tested for stray current?

I also had one of the magnets on my Evo swell and quit working. I got out my dremel and ground off the 2 sides that were swollen, it worked for a few days and then stopped. I tried contacting Hydor and never heard back from them. Which is strange because when my covers broke they sent me new ones quickly, and replied to my emails quickly also.

Did you ever clean the impeller? An often over looked part of maintenance.

I had a maxi jet light me up one day. I was using it to mix my salt, put my hydrometer in the water and ZAP!!! ( made that noise too :). ) grabbed my volt meter and 120 volts were in the water. Ouch!
Sorry your mags swelled up. I have no idea what would have caused it
