Well me personally i havent seen or really know what a pod is. But I've had one in my tank for over 4 months now with no problems at all. Tank is still less than a yr old. It ats whatever i put in the tank. Aquadine flakes, mysis, spectra pellets bloodworms.

Bet if you watch closely, the mandarin is eating the mysis. Very few turn to prepared food but it is possible, as I have one too that eats frozen food.

I would go ahead and dose some pods now if you want one in the future. Around here you can get a jar of pods for around $20. Then once your tank hits a year old buy one with some more pods to dose at the same time. I recently lost one, I put him in when my tank was around 8 months old and he lasted about 2 months. I even dosed pods, my theory is he was anorexic but who knows! When you go to buy one make sure he has a fat belly too!

I would say go for it. I have a spawning pair that both eat pellets. It is very rare that they will eat prepared food, there is a certain way to "ween" them to pellets. This is VERY long tedious process, that most people don't have the patience for (including myself.) I also really really don't want my mandarin to have to sit in a breeder box for months during the process. I just got lucky that mine started eating pellets after a few months on their own, they still pick at rocks all day long also, but once the pellets start hitting the sand they grab them up. But anyways, if you get one just make sure it has a nice fat round belly. What it very very closely and if it starts loosing that nice round gut, then I would go buy some pods. Then watch more, If he continues to shrink, go buy more pods. Eventually he will "get it," or he will start accepting prepared foods (but don't count on it.) Once you add the pods once or twice you should get a good population going.

I have had mine for about a year now and he is nice and fat. I have about 60LBS of LR and a few times I added a bottle of tiggerpods directly to the tank since I don't have a refugium.

I have a 2 or 3 inch spotted mandarin in my 12g nano cube. A lfs gave him to me since he wasnt eating there. I had hundreds of pods when he first got in there went through them in a couple days. Iv had him for about 4 months now. He is doing fine and must be finding pods to eat since he hasnt died yet....I feed him cyclopeeze every now and then since he likes that alot.
