+1 if you use ro, you need to supplement. Plants actually do need trace minerals found in the tap water too.

Plus, makig ro/di for every water change on a fw tank is a hassle considering you could hook a hose up to the sink

I copied an pasted that from another site:) I'll just fill the tank with rodi and tap, add a bunch of plants and a few neon tetras. After a few weeks I'll add the rest of them to make them feel comfortable in a school of 7. I'll wait a few months before adding the khulis.

OR, I could add a guppy initially since they do ok alone, then add the school of tetras all at once.

Tap water will encourage algae blooms in the tank, Tap water has much more junk than just phosphates and nitrates.

You CAN use tap water but if have access to use RODI it would be much better, especially if you're gonna keep corals.

RODI is not dangerous for fish, you will only have to supplement rodi water with trace elements, calcium, magnesium if you are keeping corals, fish only need 'food'.

Sorry for the confusion, but this will be a freshwater planted tank. I need to change the title. I use RODI on my reef.

I agree with everything you said, but this is a freshwater tank were talking about. And the big reason for tap being bad, is the chlorine and silicates. That's what gives us all the diatoms. The chlorine is removed by treating the water or boiling it.

Edit: posted at the same time swims and you did.

I don't see why not. I would also only use tap water personally in this tank. It's not like you are putting SPS corals in there that require perfect water params. Saveyour RODI filters for your reef.
