    He's right. Unless your buying the really expensive collector shrimp, I'd just use tap. If you are, use 50/50

    The only thing about using only sand is that the roots will have a hard time grabbing hold of something to stay in the ground.

    Maybe 5lbs of gravel mixed with 5lbs of sand would work better.

    The only issue is that the gravel will eventually make its way to the top of the sand. Maybe if I do like a 3" sand beds the plants will stay firm.
