gonna try and explain this the best i can. Im getting ready to add a BTA to my tank and worried about the PH eating it into shreds. Before i decide to put some kinda filter media around it i got an idea.. Im running a overflow box, would it be possible to A. See if the maxijet fits in my box and drill a hole in the bottom of the overflow box and put a 90degree elbow on it with something to spread out water flow. Or B. if it doesnt fit in box drill a hole and mount the maxijet under the box with just the end that sucks mounted into the box and the other end still blowing out the outlet part. My ONLY main concern would be that it would pull all the water out of the overflow box and i would not have enough water to carry over to my sump. But then again im taking water from the tank wether its in the box or not so shouldnt the level stay the same??? I could be waaay over thinking this and its 620am and i have been up all night but any input would be great! thanks

I guess my only other main concern would be that i would be taking the water that my overflow box is skimming out of my tank and putting it back in not to mention the suction from the maxi may be a issue inside the box and prevent my overflow from working properly. . hell maybe ill be better off building and additional box that houses to maxijets and have an outlet on each side..

sooo you don't think you could just put the PH in the tank and find a sweet spot to aim it so it wouldn't beat up the BTA? Maybe you just might wanna try that first before going thru all the trouble...

You're way over thinking it, but it is a neat thought experiment. If you pull water from the overflow and push it back in the tank, the flow into the overflow will go up by the amount you are recirculating causing a slight rise in water level. At some point, there would be too much, the water level and flow would be too high, and the whole thing would come a mess; a maxijet 1200 is not a threat to cause any of that.

As for the skimming effect, its probably a little more complicated. Most tanks are not skimming ideally, so there is more surface skimming that would be helpful. By increasing the flow, more will get skimmed. By slurping the water out of the stand box and shooting it back in the tank, less skim will make it to the sump. By injecting the overall water column with the skim, the ordinary water going into the overflow has more of the skim in it, causing more to go to the sump. On balance, I am guessing the two will be fairly similar, but that part is a total guess.

As for your actual problem, position the powerhead carefully and watch the anemone. Everything we do in a reef has risks. The proper way to mitigate risks is frequently not to try to make them impossible, which is impossible. Rather, the proper way to address the risk is by careful continuous observation and prompt, but never paniced reaction.

I had a Sebae anemone for 22 years and many many RBTA's for 9 and never had a problem with powerheads. In my tanks they shy a way from flow so keep their distance, once the find a spot they like they stay put. The Sebae has been on the same rock for over 12 years now.
