Maximizing flow using eductors

    I'm working on a new build and am planning out my flow.

    I am probably going to get a marineland 300 DD and add a custom calfo overflow across the entire back w/ bean animal mod. So I'll be removing the stock corner overflows.

    I want to use the 2 pre drilled holes for mini closed loops. I'm going bare bottom on this build so my thought is to put a strainer on one hole, and a fitting with 90 degree angle so I could aim one eductor aimed down the back of the tank and another one up the side. Do this in place of both corner returns.

    Then have an eductor hooked up to a sea swirl centered on each side glass. (EDIT: can't use these on Ocean Motion 4/8ways or sea swirls because the pressure created will ruin either type of device)

    What pumps and what eductors should I use for each of these applications? I know pressure is more important than gph and have been trying to weigh benefits of iwaki vs panworld... any suggestions are welcome.

    Iwaki is tried and true.

    I have been using the reefflo brand pumps for return as of late. I do have to say that their performance is up to snuff.

    With the dynamics of eductors, it changes some things. The panworld are a knock off of iwaki and I would normally consider them sub par in comparison, but they are rated for more pressure which I think makes them superior in this application.

    I have been absolutely obsessed with these over the last few weeks... I plan to incorporate a total of 5 in my new build.

    Here is how they work..

    The are based on the Bernoulli principle. Which basically states that as the speed of a gas or fluid increases, pressure decreases, creating a low pressure next to a higher one, and thus suction, and increased flow, without any added mechanics. Another way to look at it is basically a venturi pulling in water rather than air.

    Fluids tend to move from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure. Also, fluids moving at high velocity create areas of low pressure. It's similar to the way the new dyson fan and air foils work. The airflow on the top of the wing has to move a greater distance and therefore must move at a greater velocity, causing an area of lower pressure than the area on the bottom of the wing. . .thus creating lift. The same basic principle works with a fluid, creating an area of pressure around this fast moving water that is lower than the water in your tank. This creates additional flow as water is "sucked" from your tank into the penductor. The biggest variables are the amount of pressure the pump can generate and the design of the penductor. Theoretically, you should be able to calculate this, but I've never seen such a calculator.


    Penductors and eductors are basically the same thing. Penguin designed the penductor (it's shorter by about half that of a traditional eductor, it's black, and it's made to fit easier into our plumbing)

    I used a Pcific Floe Accelerator which is the same thing, it worked awesome in my 55. Too Good from my 125 I took them off the returns.

    Same concept, but less efficient design. A WHOLE lot smaller in size and much easier to use in smaller tanks. (less than a couple hundred gallons)

    It's amazing how little real data there is out there... A lot of people who have used them.. but no hard data besides the consensus that they make a HUGE difference if you can handle the size and have the right pump.

    They seem to be the perfect solution for my goal of keeping my BB clear of debris in the new build... I can't wait to see the entire bottom of a 300DD covered in encrusters....
