As of right now I do not have any mechanical filtration setup on my DT. I would like to setup somthing and was wondering if a small HOB penguin filter would do the trick? Or, should I put a filter sock on the line to my sump? My only worry is that it could overflow due to blockage. I do see a large amount of particle floating within the tank and want to keep them under control.

The sock is obv the cheapest route, the filter will cost more, and will be yet another piece of equipment to manage. I do feel the filter will work better as the over flow will just skim the waters surface.

Im stuck between a rock and a hard place and hope someone could give me some advice. Thanks in advance!

You are just going to get opinions...and I have mine. I don't do any mech filters and am quite happy not maintaining them. Your skimmer is picking up much of the slack....

Having said that... I would go with socks just because they seem easier. Any pad will fill up and overflow. I canister isn't going to overflow, you will just loose a lot of flow through it as it clogs.

I realize some folks like clear water... actually I am one of them.... but I have learned to live with it. I know my skimmer is doing great, and I am more than happy to get rid of one less maintenance requirement. Also... the coral feed off that water column you are trying to clear up. I just let them eat.

I dont like to use the mech filtration, but i think a sock in the least bit would be great. I agree with not using the mech filtration. Thanks for the advice, Ill try the sock.

Have you tried running your skimmer a little wetter? I've found that it clears the water a huge amount by just running a slight bit wetter. I agree though; I hate mech. filtration. It's just too much work and rick of it clogging.
