What are some of the best ways to minimize aggression between fish and developing territories? I've seen some establish rock within the center of the tank, limiting hiding spots and forcing fish into swimming. Any thoughts?

The one thing I have always heard, is to rearrange your rocks from time to time.

Rearranging rock is a great way of reducing territoriality and aggresion.
Other ways are to purchase fish that are compatible with each other, possibly purchasing mulitple fish at the same time, purchasing the most aggresive fish as your last fish, not having a large bioload for your sized tank, purchasing a large tank will also help as opposed to maintaining certain fish and numbers in smaller sized aquariums.

    +1 to rearranging rock

Well, actually I agree with averything reefer said.

::)Don't purchase fish if you don't know whether they can be together. I think this is the main reason people have problems, aside from over stocking a tank.
