moving tank

    :confused:when i move the tank will it be ok to add new sand to old sand? was wondering if it will change the cycle. would like the sand bottom to be a little thicker.

    If you add dead sand to live sand, I don't think it will have any impact. It will be like adding base rock to an established reef. It won't really change anything. If you add live sand, however, you will have dieoff and a mini cycle. I would say add dead sand.

    can i just use sand from the beach for it to be dead or how do i go about adding sand? would i get it from like home depot or something

    Sand from the beach will be very dirty, I wouldn't use that. I wouldn't use home depot sand unless it comes from limestone or some form of aragonite. If it's silica based, it will provide a source for diatoms. If you add live sand, you won't have die off either. The concern with the die off is if there are pieces of dead organic material, they will decay and cause an ammonia spike. This really only a concern with lr and some base rock depending where you get it and how clean it is.

    i'm sorry i think bought regular sand from lfs when i started my tank.that would be the best correct.

    If you mess with the sand bed, your are most likely going to go through a mini cycle of some sorts, whether it's live or dry sand.

    should i stir up the sand and mix it with old sand, or just pour on-top of old sand?thanks for your help!!!
