Thanx a bunch guys. You've prety much covered what I figgered myself. Just wanted to hear it from more experienced guys. I've been kickin around the idea of a reef tank for about 10 years now and am just getting up the moxy.
I prefer to stay with fluorescents if I can for lighting.

I have lots of experience with reverse ug filters but i hear they are not recommended for reef systems.

How long usually to seed a tank from 25% live rock/sand. I know about cycling freshwater but this is new.

I think i can engineer a pretty formidable skimmer so that's no prob. I like equipment to be atleast 50% more than i require.

anything else you can think of is appreciated.

OK, Ill agree with you there. If you can find a used one, then I would have to agree that would be the way to go. I guess the main factor, for me atleast, (which I should have mentioned) in doing a DIY, is that most of the time, I usually have most of the parts I need.........so I dont really spend all that much in parts. : )

Well, what kind of fluorescents? T5's are flourescents ;)If you are talking PC's, forget about it. T5's would be decent, but on that size of a tank you would still be limited on what/where you keep things.

IMHO UG filter's have no place in marine aquariums of any type.

Depends on the system. Plan for 6-8 weeks. Amount of live rock/sand as to dry often time does not make a difference in the time it takes to cycle a tank.
