And when the pairs split up to sleep, it is always boy girl. But might be two blacks, two oj, or a mix.

The 4 never sleep all together but will interact through out the day usually swimming together.

So if I buy the 2 smallest black and whites in the fish store, it's a good chance that they will both still be boys, my 2 orange clowns have been together for 3 years, one is very much the "girl".
I would pop the black and whites in the new 330 gallon on their own and then 2 weeks later pop the oranges in the tank.
Would this bigger tank, new tank mates and all the confusion, do the trick ?

If very well might work out fine. I would however not buy the smallest clowns, often time the tiny babies will not eat and succumb to disease quickly.

If it all possible try to get 2 younger B/W that are not a pair but in a tank with other young clowns.

330 gallons is a lot of water, so much so that some of your clowns may pair up and go their separate ways. You might want to add more than 2 new juveniles.

So would it always be right to add them in 2's or should I do odd numbers, sorry for the endless Qs.

My wife "loves" clowns, they were the reason "she decided" that I would get back into the hobby (and she will always think that it was her decision) ;D
So to have a couple of pairs would just thrill her.

No they do not have to be odd or even numbers. We so much room in a tank they will probably establish some individual territories. If one adult female wanders into another adult females territories she will be chased out, with plenty of room to escape in.

If you are able to add some anemones in the future all the better.

Just to avoid possible aggression issues you might want to stay away from Clarki and Maroons.

It might help to look around at images of clowns in the wild and do a little research. You will see that sometimes many clowns inhabit or reside next to large anemones. The dominate male is sometimes allowed to venture into the middle with the female, all other juveniles hover about the base and fringes of the anemone. Clowns stay close to the protective cover of the anemone, they will venture out to defend or chase off trespassers but they quickly return to their own territory.

    Sorry pepper for the hi-jack.
