I have $1500 to spend, only need the tower. No peripherals.

I want something with a gaming backbone and tons of ram. Any suggestions? (windows 8 is an absolute NO)

I was looking at these two and planned on just adding a SSD to run windows and my main work programs.

Check out this site.Bought my gaming rig there.Usually have screaming deals and lifetime tech support.
iBUYPOWER Computers - Intel 4th Gen Core Processors
My rig cost me 25.00$ more then if I purchased the components seperately and built it myself.

I get carried away too quickly. Started playing with options and quickly ended up in the 4k range lol

Will you be doing any video editing or compilation or running any type of server on your computer?

Cheapest would be to build your own, it also gives you the most customization. Its not as hard as it sounds, everything its pretty much made so it only fits one way only as long as you know what to get. I have built regular pc's and even water cooled, you can get pretty creative with diy computers. check places like xoxide and frozencpu for some cool diy mods and ideas. google the 'doom' computer tower. lol

another option is like mentioned ibuypower. I have also bought from them and their prices are actually really good. for what you would pay retail for part then take to somewhere for them to build, ibuypower would be cheaper even after shipping. I went with one of their machines a couple years ago and I still use it. runs like a champ never a problem. Their warranty is eh.... its a warranty. I had to use it when I first got my tower it was shipped without any padding inside the case (to Alaska) and the big ole cpu cooler rocked and twisted damaging the CPU. They walked me thru trouble shooting, we figured out what it was and we did a core deposit, ie they put a hold on my bank card for the cpu amount and shipped a new one out same day, when I shipped new one back they unlocked / returned the funds. Even despite that I still highly recommend them.

of course you could also use a combination of the two if you aren't computer savy. build a nice computer using the ibuypower models, write down the parts then hit newegg, and some of the other places.

I agree that you should build. Pretty much the only thing you could accidentally screw up is letting cords be too close to fans and block or stop them. Building a computer is no harder than plugging in that SSD and you can get better quality parts for a much lower price.

And as far as SSDs go, look into the Sandisk Extreme on Amazon. They are much cheaper than anything else that has comparable real world reads/writes right now because they have been discontinued for the Extreme II, which is only slightly faster with most tasks anyways. I just got a 240GB for $170 and the 120GB has been hovering around $105.

No, I do some photo editing and run a bunch of chrome and IE windows while listening to music and watching netflix pretending to work.

I have dual screens and that's a must. But in the whole scope of computing power, I'm not going to tax modern machines. I'm just sick of my 2gigs of ram that's slow and I can't play the new games that are out because my computer is so old.

I can spend up to 2k on a new pc

I'd recommend 8 to 12 gigs of DDR3 Ram. Should be plenty.

I love Asus PCs and I own a 2 thousand dollar ibuypower laptop. Both are great. I can suggest to you a full build list no problem if you want to go custom.
