so im looking into adding a couple more critters to my 40 gallon that will be a reef in the near future... I want to add a Flame angel or a Coral beauty because of their compatible size and that they are a larger fish than any I currently house... I know their not reef safe and should only be added with caution but I want something a bit larger and I had my eye or either of them for a while...

So what do you think? Its a definite no go or a possibility?... Im looking to stock my tank and let it mature before I begin to add the corals...

    Hi Whisky Tango Foxtrot

both species are possible, drawf angels are unpredictable IME
Ill list my expereinces if it helps as over the years I have had both these and other dwarfs

Coral beauties x 2 , (different tanks, different times) both developed a taste for bits of corals , the 1st one was a Zoanthid specialist and tended to leave all else alone , the second one was a fan of leather corals and although I never noticed any damage, my leather was constantly changing during the course of one day, polyps open, polyps closed, polyps open again - the CB just had one peck each visit so it might have just been picking other bits off rather than trying to eat the coral, but I was concerned for the long term health of the coral so I removed the fish

Flame angel - similar story on these, more of a browser though, had a peck here and there and again, this concerned me for the long term health of the coral, so Flamer was back to the shop

Fireball - the blue one with the orange back - have one now, thus far (Corals in since Feb, Fireball in since last Sept) no issues , it has not pecked at anything other than the rock work, substrate and glass etc

its a lottery Whisky Tango Foxtrot - beautiful fish , so IMO , worth trying but resign yourself to reversing a desicion later if required

reef tanks do change the game for most people - but IME, if you want a fish out badly enough, you can get that fish out!

ive got both the flame and coral beauty. and so far so good. they actually coexsist in bliss. lol. also they have not decided to step up to the coral buffet. they both peck around the tank, but so far have just gone for the cheap part of the menu .lol, not the corals. just another experience but i know as steve said, they do have a reputation of sometimes going after the corals. good luuck WTF. and no not meant that way. lol

Most people I talk to have had no problems with the flames. But my Foxface was one of those "with caution" fish... and he was fine for months then started nipping as he got bigger. So I think I'll stay away from the potential nippers. Might be worth a try for ya though.

I have heard many people who had no problems in the beginning with Flame but eventually the coral picking began.

I had wanted one for my reef tank but do to other peoples experiences I decided to just put him in my FOWLR. Really makes a tang POP!

I suggest some firefish.. Purple are really cool.

Have a Coral Beauty in my 210 reef. No problems at all.

My Powder Blue Tang on the other hand loves my Elegance!

Just over feed him for the best chance he wont nip. Fish are often stereotyped but they do have individual differences. Good luck!
