Alright i have officially had it with my ocotpus bh 800s skimmer, it has been nothing but problems since day one, and i just cant take dealing with it any more, it has never worked right and now I am ready for a new one. I believe it is causing my algae issues with it not working right and i just fed up with it, ive tried and tired and tried to get it to work right over the past like 7 months ive had it, but never been able to.

I have to have a HOB skimmer i dont want to spend more than $200, i know most say save up and buy later but i seriously need a new skimmer like now. It also needs to support a heavy bioload and i have a 46 bowfront.

One skimmer that i am looking at getting is the Coralife Super Needle, i am open to more suggestions. I am also willing to buy USED if anyone has anything that still works good.

I am looking to buy today or tomorrow

    thanks!

You should check on a few things before you go and get a new one. Do you have an auto top off system? They're extremely easy to setup if you don't. I noticed that with my skimmer, just a few millimeters of water level difference and it doesn't work. Also..have you left it alone on one setting for a few days *without touching it*?

Sorry I cant be of more use but I have seen the Remora's in use personally. Outside of that the only other HOB skimmer I have seen in good working condition on a tank was a Warner Marine, but those are out of your price range I believe.

Sucks that you cant get the Octopus BH 800S working properly. Though it looks a little more complex in design than some of the others I just saw. That new LX1000 looks nice, but big and red :)

its just reocurring problems thats been happening since the first day i got it, ive always had issues with this thing and i can never get it working right, and now im just done with it, i really dont want to even try anymore since ive been trying for 7 months.

and i dont have a ATO but i always top off at least a little bit every day even if i dont need to. And yea ive left it alone without touching many of times before and still doesnt work right.

    i've just given up

i have heard the remora's are good their cheap enough to where i may just order one, but i just worry about it not supporting a heavy biolad

and thanks for the suggestion of the other one ill check it out

Sorry about your troubles Chicky. I've got an HOB w/Fuge lighting and everything from CPR on my 55g. That came to about $350.
The skimmer is way nice, but I'm not impressed with the fuge. I imagine you can get just the skimmer for half of what I paid for mine.

i have a aquac remora (standard) on my 55. works well, i have an overstocked tank. but nitrates stay at zero. i do have some phospates but thats from the tap water i use (like .2-.5).

i think the aquac remora would be ok for a 46. if you are worried about it you could get the aquac remora pro.

i am assuming a sump is out of the question

alos, stay away from the via-aqua. its kinda apealing cause its a multi finction skimmer/filter/uv but its junk. 2 broke in the mail, las tone never worked right. place i bought it from was pretty cool though. the last time i called the guy i talked to gave me the option of getting the aquac instead.

I got a bh-100f for my 55 and 46 gallon and it works GREAT! Sorry about the 100, but dont get a the coralife super, unless you want to mop up half your tank every week. Think about giving the 100f a chance its the best hob skimmer ive had, as for the super skmmer, id rather have my flimsy prism :p
