My tank has been set up for a little over a month now and I have really not had to do a top off. I have to add water to my fresh water every 3-4 days. Why is my saltwater not evaporating and could this be an explanation for high nitrates? I am all ears so fire away.

Unless I'm missing something, 30 days with zero evaporation seems impossible. Even if you had glass covers on the tank, there should still be some evaporation.

Actually I do have a glass canopy lol. But I am not saying I haven't had any evaporation but it is little to none.

i have noticed the same thing i have about a gallon to replace every 4 to 5 days i have a 125 gallon and really didn't understand why my two 55 gallon tanks need a gallon a day both are salt i think it could due with moisture in the air i have my tanks in the basement and the air is pretty moist what room is your tank in and do you have a dehumidifier close to your tank i am not sure if the tank temp would have to do with the evap and i am not sure about the excess nitrate i have the same problem in my tank so i would love to know if it does do you have a sump?

this is why you all need an auto top off system...You can build one for about 50-70 bucks and only have to fill up a resevoir every few weeks.

Well I guess I read that wrong. I took your meaning to say you haven't had to add any water to top off the system in over a month.
