So I'll be moving in about a week or two, and upgrading my 29g to a 40B in the process. Thought I'd start a little thread here.

Yesterday, we finished the custom stand for it. Altogether, cost me $70. It's big enough to house a sump/fuge and whatever else I need, but I won't have one setup initially.

so looks like I should be moving within a week here. I'll be setting up the new 40B and moving from the 29g.

My question is how best to accomplish this. I have about 25lbs of live rock in the current tank, and about 20lbs of dry base rock ready to add to the new tank. Should I remove all the live rock from the existing tank and place it all in the new 40B along with the base rock all at once? I am using new sand, but I will probably move a cup or two of existing over to help seed the new tank as well.

If I move everything over like that, would it be ok to go ahead and move all the livestock, or should I leave them in the old tank for a little while so the new tank can cycle? If I leave them in the old tank, should I leave at least some of the live rock there until I move the fish? I also have a bottle of One and Only to add to the new tank to boost the cycle.

Altogether we're talking about 4 fish (2 occellaris, 1 Bangaii cardinal, 6-line), a couple of shrimp and CUC. I do plan on purchasing a new CUC from reefcleaners as soon as the tank is up.

I think I'm kinda leaning towards trying to move everything at once.. I'm thinking that by moving all the existing rock with dry base rock, it won't really need to cycle.. Any thoughts?

You planning on using the 29 as a sump? Are you going to drill the 40 or use an overflow box? Sweet upgrade

I'm not adding a sump to it just yet, but it'll probably be either the 29 or a 20g when I do add one. I'm not drilling the 40, so it'll be an overflow box once I do.

So the new tank and stand are in place. Currently have it filled with just tap water to check for any small leaks. Amazingly, it's perfectly level without having to adjust a thing.

    Next steps:

    • Mix up about 30g fresh saltwater
    • Add sand and all the equipment
    • Add new base rock, live rock from old tank
    • Order new CuC from ReefCleaners
    • Move over all livestock from old tank.

With any luck, I'll have everything transferred over this weekend.

I'll be moving over a bangaii cardinal, 2 occ clowns (one black, one orange), cleaner shrimp, goby/pistol shrimp combo and a lawnmower blenny.
