The pump is screwed to the bottom plate. You have to take the whole thing apart. Take off the cup, unscrew the bubble plate, undo the pump connection to bottom plate, unscrew from bottom plate. You can take off the outside pump intake to inspect the impeller though.

Yeah what he said lol. :laugh5:
I alread took it apart to make sure I had the new 2009 model with the new black needlewheel and metal shaft. I'm NOT looking forward to cleaning the pump since my stands leave very little room to work with since my sump is so darn tall.

So you can get to the impeller without taking the whole thing apart then?

    Ha...

No, but you can at least check to see if it is going to be worth your time. Price you pay for a small foot print I suppose. Although, with my new big sump in a closet, it isn't really an issue for me.

I would have picked up the Supermarin model with external pump, but my sump isn't big enough for it. I have a CPR CR2000 wet/dry, so my real estate is minimal to say the least.

Am sorry to say, but if you paid almost 1k for a skimmer and have to go through that trouble just to clean it, I dont think its worth the money. For the money that you paid, it should clean itself. Enjoy your new toy.

Darned skippy. I'm glad someone said it for me. Now, I like a good, expensive piece of reef tank regalia just as much as the next guy. If the skimmer works 5x better than a $200 model, then maybe it's worth it--but you hear in this hobby often enough (and right on the money, I might add) that if something is inconvenient, hard to get to, or out of the way; it will invariably become neglected.

While I certainly can't speak for anyone else, I'll say if I had to take a skimmer completely apart for maintenance, I'd start missing the day when I had a Coralife 220.

Sorry to be such a bummer, especially when you're pumped about your new purchase; but I had to say it. :-/

That's ok. No offense ever taken here. If I have to clean my BK as much as I had to clean my Aqua-C, then I'm ok. Cleaning the chamber on both are equally the same to be honest, both are/will be a pain in the butt since my sump has tall walls. How the BK reaction chamber comes apart, that is actually easier to clean than the Aqua-C. My knuckles always got gunked up when I had to wipe the neck out. So as I see it, it will be no harder when I do my annual cleanings. :)
