Sorry for the double post, just wanted to ake sure it was hit. Also put in my Thread..

So, it is hot now and this is the first summer for the new reef. I had the 90 gallon Cichlid and dont recall such a problem. Likley due to the new T5 lights. Glad I didnt go MH...

So anyway, I am struggling with the temp at 82'. Is this going to be a problem or will it be OK ?

I am not looking forward to a chiller and not sure if I would go that far.
I have mostly fish, but have a few anemones, xenia, leather, shrooms, flowerpot, and toadstool.

Oh, and the room temp is 77'

I just put a room fan in there to blow on the tank to see if that helps and may open the doors over night or when I can.

    Any thoughts on this ?

    Cheers

Is it open or a canopy? Maybe raise the light fixture higher or hang it from the ceiling. Give it some more sapace between th elights and the water....And only post in one place give us time to get around we are old.....

82 is a bit warm, and if you have cool temp corals, they will not respond well to that temp. If you don't want a chiller, invest in some cooling fans that will blow across the top of the tank, and be prepared to up your topoff water sooner than you do now.

82 isn't too bad, some people keep their tanks at that temp. I would try the fans and see if that helps. Do you have air conditioning?

Thanks All, sorry for the DP, but after I put it in the tank thread, I realized it was the wrong place maybe.

I do not have the canopy on, standard fixture height from the lights.

I added the room fan to blow on it, well see if that helps.

Is it worse to have the temp fluctuate between 2' or be a constant higher temp ?

Hopefully everyone will be ok. It was a nice 78 all winter.

    Cheers

Well, After a 90' day, with the room fan pinting at the side of the tank and room temp at 77, the tank came back down to 80'

That makes me feel somewhat better anyway.

    Cheers

I'm guessing you live somewhere in the south. This is my first summer to with my tank. I started it in October right about the time when the temp started cooling off by FL standards. During the day I'm running at between 82-84. At night I drop down to 80. I hope this doesn't cause issues down the road. I simply just can't afford a chiller at this point. Keep us posted.

Same here in southwest fla. I did raise my mh lights to almost 9" off water, corals I have are not too light demanding. I use a clip on fan directly across water surface and have it on a timer so at lights out when the house cools a bit the tank temp doesn't fluctuate too much. I keep the chiller option in mind though...

I've just gone through a couple days of 80+ degrees up here in the north and have also noticed the tank raising temp a bit from about a 79 to 81 or so. I Just put on mh lights a month or so ago and am planning on running ac during the hot peak days and the fan sounds like a good idea, will have to get a small clamp on one soon with a timer.

You could also change the lighting period ,shorten it so there on during the evening when its cooler. Not a perfect solution but may be better than overheating.
